Color flight over South Pearl hotel
Not far away from the South Pearl Hotel you can enjoy the colourful flight of the bee-eaters. Their nests are in holes. They prefer softer terrain in which they tunnel burrows more than a metre long. The sheer sandy wall next to the hotel is extremely suitable for them. At the end of each burrow there is a nest chamber.
The bird has auburn plumage, a black mask like a robber, turquoise chest and a neck the colour of ripe wheat.
A bee-eater can eat honey bees because of its ability to make them harmless. After catching a bee, a bee-eater removes the sting by repeatedly hitting the insect on a hard surface thus extracting most of the venom. To the onlooker it seems the bird is playing with its food
At the end of summer and the beginning of autumn bee-eaters start difficult migration. Their route passes over Spain, Southern France and Northern Italy, over the Mediterranean and Gibraltar. Their flocks fly over the Sahara to reach Western Africa where they spend the winter.
